False sexual assault claims

Three Upper Hutt women have been charged in the past week for laying false sexual assault complaints.

In the latest incident, a woman, 41, was arrested on Wednesday after alleging that two staff at her workplace committed serious sexual assaults on her last year.

The woman is due to appear in court today.

Last week two young women were arrested after claiming they were kidnapped and sexually violated at an Upper Hutt address.

Detective Sergeant Warren Olsson said false complaints were a growing concern. As well as causing stress to those accused of offending, they also took police resources away from victims who really needed police help.

Police treated all sexual assault complaints seriously.

Two women appeared in court last week and have been remanded to appear again on August 28 on charges of falsely claiming they were detained for sex.
