Woman accused of false complaints remanded
One of three Wellington women arrested and charged
by Upper Hutt police in the past week for making false sexual assault
complaints has been remanded on bail to reappear in court next week.
The 41-year-old, who has interim name suppression, faces two charges -- one
of making a false written statement to police on February 28 this year
alleging she was indecently assaulted by a male colleague, and another of
making a false statement alleging sexual violation by another male colleague
on March 13. She was bailed without plea by a registrar in the Upper Hutt
District Court yesterday on conditions that she reside at a Johnsonville
address, not contact the two complainants and not enter New Zealand defence force
property.
She was ordered to reappear on August 23.
Last week, two women were arrested after claiming they were kidnapped and
sexually violated at an Upper Hutt address.
They have been remanded to appear again on August 28 on charges of falsely
claiming they were detained for sex.
Detective Sergeant Warren Olsson said one later admitted they wanted a ride
home in a police car.
Mr Olsson said false complaints were a growing concern. As well as causing
stress to those accused of offending, they also took police resources away
from victims who needed help. Where a false complaint was proven,
compensation was sought for the cost of medical and forensic tests, he said.
