Woman faces charge of laying false complaint

An 18-year-old Cambridge woman will be charged with making a false complaint after telling police she was sexually assaulted at a park last Sunday.

Detectives initially believed it could have involved drink spiking because the woman had been drinking at Cambridge bars and had little recollection of what had happened.

The woman told police she woke in Thornton Park. She was partially clothed and had no memory of how she got there. She said she left her friends at about 3 on Sunday morning.

Detective constable Steve Dearns of Te Awamutu said police would charge the woman next week.

There have been 22 unsolved complaints of drink spiking in Hamilton bars since November.

In seven of the cases women believe they were either sexually assaulted or raped.
