Camera catches out false rape complaint

One of Hutt City's street cameras has helped reveal that a rape complaint was a lie.

A woman called into the Lower Hutt Police Station late one night to report she had been raped. She claimed she'd been sitting in a bus shelter in Bunny Street when a man dragged her away and attacked her.

There are CCTV cameras in Bunny Street, so police called up images recorded at the time the woman said the offence had happened.

Despite the woman saying there was no one around at the time, there were in fact plenty of people in Bunny St at that hour. However she was not one of them.

When presented with the proof, the woman admitted she had made the story up. "She did it to get attention," a police spokesperson said.
