Woman not proceeding with rape complaint
NZPA

Dunedin police investigating claims a female student was raped while walking through the University of Otago will not take the matter further, after the woman decided she did not want to proceed with the case.

Detective Mark Lodge, of Dunedin CIB, said yesterday police had no evidence to suggest the woman had made a false complaint. She had simply decided she did not want to take the matter further, after being informed of what would be involved.

"It's of concern to us there may well be a man out there that has committed a rape, that we don't know his identity," he said.

The 21-year old woman, a third-year university student, told police the attack happened when she stopped to adjust her shoe while walking through the university early last Friday.

Police had spent "a few man hours" investigating the woman's claims, with police guarding the scene of the attack, conducting a scene examination and interviewing the complainant.

Mr Lodge said it was not uncommon for complainants to decide they did not want to proceed with cases.
