Man given five years' jail for indecent assault

A 59-year-old man who indecently assaulted his two daughters more than 20 years ago committed a "huge and gross" breach of their trust, the Nelson District Court has been told.

The man, who has name suppression to protect his daughters' identities, was on Friday sentenced to five years in jail.

He was previously found guilty by a jury of indecently assaulting and committing indecent acts on his daughters: one from 1974-1981 when she was aged five to 12, and the other daughter when she was 14 years old in 1982-83.

Judge David McKegg said the offending was prolonged and repetitive and was a "huge and gross breach of trust as a father".

"You offended against her in numerous and really repetitively abusive ways."

Defence lawyer John Sandston said the man maintained his innocence and was supported by his wife and stepdaughter.

He said the man led an "exemplary life" and was well-regarded in his community.
