Teen's false complaint backfires

A plan hatched to accuse an associate of an assault that never happened has backfired on a teenager.

William Lawrence Bennett, 18, of Masterton, pleaded guilty to charge of making a false statement to police when he appeared in the city's district court yesterday.

Bennett, currently serving a sentence of supervision for his role in the killing of Masterton's prized talking cockatoo, was convicted over the false statement and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.

Bennett had given a written statement to police on September 25, alleging he had been beaten up and naming his attacker.

Two months later, Bennett admitted to police that he made up the story, saying he devised the plan out of anger because his victim had got away with something for which Bennett had been blamed.
