Security footage little help in identifying girl's attacker

Closed-circuit television has provided no help in identifying a rapist who attacked a 12-year-old girl as she walked home alone through school grounds after a dancing competition in Hastings.

Police have watched footage from cameras in the central business district, but the "krumping" dance event, which finished between 10pm and 10.30pm, on Saturday, was not caught on camera.

Police have also been speaking to witnesses at the competition and people who were with the victim during the evening.

Constable Lisa Tod of Hastings CIB said the girl became separated from her friends while walking home to a relative's house, and was attacked in the grounds of Ebbett Park School between 11pm and 2am.

She was found wandering in the Raureka area by two men waiting for a taxi at 2.15am, who called police.

Ms Tod said the girl's family had believed she was sleeping safely at a relative's house, and were devastated to hear what had happened.

The girl was traumatised, and would be formally interviewed today.

In the meantime, police were looking for a Maori thought to be in his teens, who was wearing a white krumping shirt with a blue and black design, and jeans. He had shaggy hair with a shoulder-length "rat's tail".

Krumping is a dance craze from the United States that is similar to break- dancing.

Contestants wear white shirts or hoodies painted with their group or individual colours and names, and challenge each other to spontaneous competitions.
