Hopes pinned on DNA to catch 12-year-old's rapist
NZPA

Police say they are likely to need a DNA match to catch the man who raped a 12-year-old girl in the grounds of a Hastings primary school.

The girl was attacked late at night on April 14 in the grounds of Ebbett Park Primary as she returned from a "krumping" dance event to the relative's home where she was staying.

More than a week on and Detective Sergeant Mike Foster of Hastings told NZPA there was little fresh for police to go on.

Nobody had been found matching the description the girl provided of her attacker.

"It's all going to come down to DNA evidence I think," Mr Foster said.

"We'll see if we can get a DNA profile and go from there."

Police were waiting for forensic evidence results from ESR.

Mr Foster believed the victim would be returning to school today after the end of the holidays.

She was "as good as she can be, I suppose".

Mr Foster did not want to comment on why the girl had been allowed out to the dance event and to return home without adult supervision.

The attacker is described as a Maori man, thought to be in his teens, wearing a white shirt with a blue and black design on it and jeans.

He had shaggy hair and a shoulder length rat's tail
