Patchy haircut clue to abduction

Police are investigating the abduction of a 13 year-old girl in Taupo. She was taken from her bedroom at the family's home in Terence Street on Monday night. The girl was then placed in a dark-coloured four door vehicle with a loud exhaust, and driven to John Street where she managed to escape.

Detective Ross Bagley says there were three offenders aged between 16 and 20 years-old. He says one of them has a patchy haircut, indicating that it was perhaps a "rough job" done at home.

Girl, 13, snatched from her bedroom
by Kelly Makiha

A Taupo teenage girl is still shaken after being snatched from her bedroom while at home with her parents and shoved in a car with three men.

The terrified 13-year-old managed to escape from her kidnappers about 300m down the road and run for help. The abduction has stunned Taupo police who have turned to the public to catch the offenders.

Detective Rick Bagley of the Taupo police said it was only luck the girl managed to jump out of the car and run away when it slowed down.

The abduction happened on Monday about 9.30pm. The girl was downstairs in her bedroom at her Terence St house while her parents were upstairs.

A man, believed to be on his own, went into the house and grabbed the girl without her other family members seeing. Mr Bagley said the girl was put in a waiting vehicle with two others and driven to John St where she escaped. She ran from the car screaming for help and the car drove off. She then ran home and police were called.

The vehicle is described as a four-door, dark coloured vehicle with a loud exhaust. The offenders are described as three men, one Caucasian and two Maori or Polynesians aged 16 to 20. One of the Polynesian or Maori men is described as being tall with black hair with blond patches on the back of his head.

Mr Bagley said the teenager was still too shaken to talk about her ordeal publicly. "We have no idea what the motive was. If we have got someone going into people's homes and doing this then obviously we have got a huge concern." Mr Bagley said police wanted to speak to anyone with information or who saw people acting suspiciously in Terence St. Information can be passed on in confidence to police by calling (07) 377 6060.

Teenager's abductors still on run
by Belinda Feek

Taupo police are still hunting three men who abducted a 13-year-old girl from her home at 9.30pm on Monday.

Detective Rick Bagley said the girl's bedroom was in the lower storey of a two-storey home in Terence St.

The girl was grabbed from behind after going to close the front door which she noticed was slightly open.

She was then put into a waiting four-door, dark-coloured vehicle with a loud exhaust.

She managed to escape on John St, about 300m from her home, after the offender's car slowed.

"The vehicle has then taken off and she's run down John St yelling for help."

The victim's father, brother and sister were upstairs at the time of the abduction.

Mr Bagley said it was of serious concern that this kind of "unusual crime for Taupo" had happened.

The victim, whose family was new to Taupo, was still distraught by the incident, he said.

The three offenders are described as a Caucasian and two Maori or Polynesian men aged between 16 and 20
