ChCh police believe investigation of false complaint would cost tens of thousands of dollars

The police in Christchurch believe investigating a false complaint of aggravated robbery made by tourists, would have cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Johan Van de Lande, and Bart Stevens of the Netherlands and Antonino Salamone from Italy had claimed they were attacked by armed men while sleeping in their campervan near Akaroa, earlier this month.

But today they admitted making a false statement, saying they invented the story to explain damage to the van.

Detective Sergent Ross Tarawhiti says the investigation involved about 100 hours of police work and took resources away from a homicide inquiry.
