Tourists charged with faking theft
by Jo McKenzie-McLean

Three Dutch tourists, who claimed they were robbed at gunpoint while camping in Akaroa, will appear in the Christchurch District Court today for allegedly fabricating the incident.

Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti, of Hornby CIB, said the three men, aged 19, 24 and 29, had been charged with making a false complaint to police.

The men were arrested in a joint police and customs operation at Christchurch International Airport yesterday as they tried to leave the country bound for Melbourne with the reportedly stolen items on them.

The men claimed they were robbed on Sunday, February 10, at 2am, in a layby on the road about 15 minutes from Akaroa.

They said three men of Polynesian appearance smashed through the front passenger's window of the tourists' hired campervan with a beer bottle.

The tourists said the men searched the vehicle and demanded money, getting away with a small amount of cash and electronic items -- including laptops and digital cameras.
