Police investigating the attempted kidnapping of an 11-year-old boy in Havelock North at the weekend are seeking public help as they follow up leads.

Detective Paul Buckley of Hastings police said the boy had just left Animalz pet shop on Napier Road on Saturday afternoon when he was approached by a man who grabbed his arm and tried to drag him into a parked car.

The boy kicked the man in the shins and ran off.

Police were today working through information and wanted to hear from anyone who may be able to assist.

"If anyone in Havelock village on Saturday afternoon saw anything untoward outside the pet shop then we'd be more than interested to talk," he told NZPA.

The man was described as dark-skinned, of medium build with straight black hair. He was wearing a pink T-shirt with "porn star" in black lettering.

He was driving a bronze/tan coloured 1980s square-shaped saloon with a dent in the left front bumper.

Mr Buckley said police were pursuing several leads and especially trained interviewers would talk to the boy this week.
