Police: attempted kidnapping of boy did not take place
NZPA

Police now believe that an attempted kidnapping of an 11-year-old boy in Havelock North on Saturday did not take place.

The boy told police a man grabbed him when he left Animalz pet shop and tried to force him into a car.

The boy kicked the man in the shins and ran off.

"The events that allegedly took place on Saturday appear not to have happened. While the boy may have seen a man who fitted the description he gave police, we have established that the attempted kidnap did not take place," Detective Paul Buckley said.

There had been some inconsistencies in the boy's version of events.

Staff at the pet shop and the boy's friends had also been spoken to.

Police would not be taking any further action, Mr Buckley said.
