Tourist sexually assaulted at Haruru Falls

Police are investigating a sexual attack on an English tourist on a popular walking track in the Bay of Islands.

A 27-year-old woman has told police she was attacked while walking between the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and the Haruru Falls carpark yesterday between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. She says she was dragged from the track and sexually assaulted.

The woman has described her attacker as an athletically-built male European in his mid to late thirties, with dark hair, wearing blue jeans and a navy blue t-shirt with a white circular pattern on the front. She says he spoke with what she believes was a North American accent and carried a backpack.

Police would like to hear from anyone who walked the track yesterday afternoon or evening, or who has information about a person fitting the description.
