English tourist raped in New Zealand

An English tourist was raped after being dragged from a secluded track near a beauty spot in New Zealand, police confirmed today.

The 27-year-old woman was attacked as she walked between the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and the Haruru Falls car park in Northland in New Zealand's North Island.

The attack happened between 5.30pm and 6pm on Tuesday.

New Zealand Police said the attacker was barefoot and spoke with an American accent.

He was described as white, in his mid to late 30s, athletically built, with short dark brown hair.

He was wearing blue jeans, a navy blue T-shirt and carrying a full backpack.

Police said efforts were still being made to try to find the attacker but so far no arrests had been made.

A spokesman said it was not known whether the woman had decided to return to the UK as a result of the attack, but she was currently still in Northland.

It is understood she was in the country on a working holiday.

A resident from a house nearby said the woman had come to her asking for help after being attacked.

The incident comes two months after the murder of British backpacker Karen Aim.

The 26-year-old, from Orkney, was killed as she made her way home from a night out in the North Island town of Taupo
