Daughter may also be victim of assault
by Glenn McLean

A New Plymouth solo mother has been accused of using a home- made whip to repeatedly punish her three-year-old son.

Kristine Gaye Sims, 42, appeared in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday on charges of assaulting a child and assault with a weapon.

Police allege Sims, who also has a 10-year-old daughter, keeps a 66cm home-made fibreglass whip, complete with a tail, at her home.

It is alleged she has regularly used the whip to hit her son as punishment for bad behaviour.

Police believe she has repeatedly struck the toddler on his bottom, his arms, legs and back.

The alleged assaults have been witnessed by Sims' daughter, who is also alleged to have been the victim of an assault by her mother.

Defence counsel Turitea Bolstad said Sims maintains she is not guilty of the charges.

Judge Ian Thomas remanded the case until August 28 for a depositions date to be set.

Sims was granted bail and excused from appearing on the callover date.

* INTERIM name suppression has been granted for a Waitara woman accused of doing an indecent act on an animal and assaulting a child.

Police allege the woman used a dog in a sexual act at her home earlier this year.

The woman is also accused of assaulting a three-year-old child.

Defence counsel Julian Hannam asked for name suppression because the Taranaki Daily News would use the story to "sell a few more papers".

Judge Thomas remanded the woman on bail until September 16.

* TEENAGER Courtney Leigh Chapman-Stone has been accused of several charges, including making a false rape complaint to police.

Chapman-Stone, 18, a barmaid of New Plymouth, has denied charges of assault with intent to injure, theft, threatening to kill and making a false statement.

Police allege she called 111 on June 30 and said she had being raped by a group of men at De Havilland Drive. The call was traced back to her cellphone.

Earlier that month she is alleged to have kicked Ana Lynley Cleaver in the head and face several times at a New Plymouth address before she stole her wallet.

Judge Thomas remanded the assault matters off for a defended hearing on November 24, while the false complaint charge was remanded until September 17.
