Police lay charges over false complaints
by Jenny Ling

Two people who claimed they were victims of robberies in Wellington have been arrested and charged for wasting police time after they made false complaints, police allege.

A 46-year-old man appeared in the Wellington District Court today charged with burglary and making a false complaint in relation to the robbery of a Clifton Terrace carpark building on Monday.

A parking attendant told police he was grabbed by the throat and punched in the face by a man who took off with three cash boxes at around 7am.

A 39-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman appeared in court yesterday charged with burglary and accessory after the fact in relation to same incident.

They have been remanded on bail and reappear in court on September 12.

Police also arrested a 26-year-old man who will appear in court on Monday charged with theft from his employer and making a false complaint in relation to a reported robbery in a service lane between Manners Mall and Dixon Street on August 7.

Acting detective senior sergeant Donna Howard, of Wellington CIB, said the claims generated considerable work for police.

A team of five detectives spent more than four days investigating the Clifton Terrace robbery, she said.

The callouts also involved forensic staff, specialist photographers and fingerprinters.

Ambulance staff were also called out to both incidents.

"We treat all cases as genuine and it is disappointing when that is proved not to be the case," Ms Howard said.

"False reports such as these cause needless and unfounded public fear that Wellington city is unsafe."
