Teen made up abduction attempt

A 13-year-old who told police a man had tried to abduct her has been referred to police youth aid after admitting the statement was false.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said a man had been charged after the Wellington girl told police he had tried to abduct her while she was walking home on Sussex Street in suburban Newtown last week.

However, when the girl was questioned again a few days later she admitted the allegation was false.

Mr Miller would not go into details about the alleged abduction but confirmed the man charged was known to the girl.

"Something was behind the incident so it wasn't completely out of the blue. A man was charged with attempted abduction and that will now be withdrawn. "
