Hunt for Cemetery rapist
Woman claims she fought off attackers only to be raped next night
by Vicki Waterhouse

Police are hunting a man after a woman claimed she was raped in a Tauranga cemetery _ the night after she said a similar attempt had been made by the same man and his friends.

The 20-year-old from Tauranga was out socialising and drinking on The Strand on Friday night when she left with five men who she knew casually.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier said the group walked through town and when they arrived outside the library on Willow St between 1am and 2am one man grabbed her and the five attempted to sexually assault her.

''She inflicted an injury on one of them,'' he said.

Mr Brazier would not elaborate on what damage the woman did to the offender.

The next night at 10pm the woman was on her way home from work when she was grabbed by one of the men.

''She was attacked from behind by a male who dragged her into the cemetery,'' Mr Brazier said.

The cemetery is on the corner of Fraser St and 18th Ave.

''He knocked her over and she struck her head on a headstone.

He then raped her and took off.''

Mr Brazier said the woman was conscious during the rape and extremely traumatised.

''She's undergone a fairly horrific ordeal,'' Mr Brazier said.

''She received quite bad bruising and abrasions, and obviously swelling to her head wound.''

She has received medical treatment and been offered Victim Support.

Mr Brazier said the man who raped the woman on Saturday night had known her for a little while but they were not in any sort of relationship. He was a friend of other friends she knew, he said.

Police will be looking at CCTV footage to attempt to identify the five men involved in the Friday night attack.
