Falsely Accused
Letter to the Editor
by Paula Weir

An interesting article on rape on the front page of the Weekend Press last Saturday. However, given the fact that once again the crime of false allegations was not given space to counter what seemed like more hysteria the objective of the articles may not be achieved.

Rape victims are entitled to victim support, ACC payouts, counselling, don't attend numerous court hearings, have a paid prosecutor, get paid to attend court and often enter through a private entrance to avoid media glare.

In contrast, the falsely accused lose their passports and freedom, have no victim support, pay for a decent defence, lose their homes, have their DNA stored on record, have equal trouble being believed, front up to the media, and decades down the track struggle to regain their shattered lives and reconcile relationships.

Sympathy for rape victims has not been helped by the failure of people like Jan Jordan and Dr Kim McGregor to acknowledge the equally serious crime of false allegations and the destruction they can cause to peoples lives.
