Interview: The Bill Ralston Show
(An extract)
Russell
Brown: A year ago, TVNZ
chief executive Ian Fraser unveiled Bill Ralston as the broadcaster's new
head of news and current affairs and paid tribute to his new man's hint of
mongrel. "
Having declared that
"TVNZ's news and current affairs can do what it does better and for
less," Ralston set about shedding some high profile staff and
programmes. He said he wanted no more boring stories, he told programmes to
take risks, and deliver more exclusives. On Tuesday One News broke two. On
Holmes there were claims of sexual abuse in a childrens' home in Wellington
forty years ago.
Holmes:
First tonight, it was supposed to be a safe haven, an orphanage - abandoned
children were taken there to be looked after to live, to be kept safe -
vulnerable, homeless children. But tonight three people claim that in the
1960s, Wellington's Berhampore childrens' home was anything but safe.
Russell Brown: And unusually the
programme named the accused man.
[Man's voice]: These are very serious allegations that could destroy the
rest of his life, why are you bringing them up now?
[Woman's voice]: Because he's damaged my life.
