An independent
commissioner has been appointed to investigate allegations of sexual abuse at
Wellington's Berhampore Children's Home. Thirteen people have
complained of being sexually abused during the 50s and 60s by its former
head, Walter Lake, who died almost 20 years ago before police could lay
charges. The complainants and
Presbyterian Support, which ran the home, have agreed to assign an
independent commissioner. The complainants'
lawyer, Gordon Paine, says a report should be completed shortly which will
help to ascertain what steps can be taken to bring closure to the matter. |
