Retired
brother in court on sex charges A retired Catholic brother has appeared in Upper Hutt
District Court on charges of committing indecencies on a school pupil 20
years ago. The 67-year-old brother was given interim name suppression
by Judge Phillip Connell yesterday. He is accused of committing six acts of indecency against
a 15-year-old boy at Hato Paora Maori boys Catholic school at Feilding in
1984. No plea was entered by his lawyer Paul Surridge. Judge Connell bailed the man on condition he does not
accompany a person under 17 without adult supervision, or try to contact the
complainant. After the hearing, the defendant was bundled out through a
side door and driven off by a court attendant. He is due to re-appear at a pre-depositions hearing on
August 27, where continued name suppression will be argued. The complainant came forward late last year, police said
this week. A Justice Ministry spokesman said "it was not
unusual" for court staff to escort defendants from court premises if
there was a personal risk. The decison by the court staff member to use his own car
to drive was personal, and he had finished his duties for the day. |
