Ex-teacher on sex charges
NZPA - A former teacher at a Catholic boys’ school near Feilding appeared in
the Lower Hutt District Court yesterday on sexual abuse charges. The man, John Louis Stevenson (66), has been
charged with six counts of indecent assault and one of inducing a boy to do
an indecent act.

Manawatu school in the late 1970s and early 1980s. John Stevenson, 66, is

three pupils aged between 14 and 16, while the accused - also known as

Maori secondary school. The Wellington man, 66, is the second former worker
at Hato Paora, a Catholic Maori secondary school at Feilding, to be charged
with sexual abuse.

abusing sick and vunerable boys in his care was sent on a six-month course by
the Church after admitting the abuse.
Yesterday, a judge in Wellington District Court was told that the
Catholic Church, which Brother Andrew Cody had devoted his life to, had known
about his offending for years. Judge Bruce Davidson said Cody had told his
superiors about the abuse several years after he retired in 1991

- Former brother pleads guilty to indecent acts on boy
A
retired Catholic brother charged last August with indecently assaulting a
school pupil 20 years ago has pleaded guilty. Andrew Cody, 67, and in poor
health, lives in Upper Hutt. He admitted in Upper Hutt District Court
yesterday three charges of indecent assault and one of permitting an indecent
act. The offences involved a 15-year-old boy at Hato Paora College, a Maori
Boys Catholic school at Feilding, in 1984. The guilty pleas were an 11th-hour
deal in return for other charges being withdrawn.

sexual abuse of a student at Hato Paora College in Fielding…. Detective
Constable John Fagan says police would like to hear from anyone who was at
Hato Paora in the 1980s and who may have any information which could help the
investigation. The latest case follows the sentencing of former Catholic
priest Alan Woodcock last month to seven years in prison for the sex abuse of
teenage boys
