A retired Catholic teacher has appeared in court charged
with sexual abuse at a Manawatu school in the late 1970s and early 1980s. John Stevenson, 66, is charged with six counts of indecent
assault and one of inducing a boy to perform a sexual act. According to the
charges, the assaults were against three pupils aged between 14 and 16, while
the accused - also known as Brother Bernard - was a teacher at Hato Paora
Maori Boys Catholic school in Feilding. Stevenson was released on bail and will reappear at Lower
Hutt District Court on December 1. Earlier this year, 67-year-old Andrew Cody was jailed for
two and a half years for indecently assaulting three students at the same
school. |
