Jurors take time in abuse case

A High Court Jury in Christchurch will begin a third day of deliberations today in the trial of former Catholic brother Bernard Kevin McGrath on historic child-sex charges.

McGrath, 58, denies 44 charges; of sodomy and indecency relating to 15 boys who were at Marylands, a residential school on the outskirts of Christchurch, run by the St John of God Order, in the mid-1970s.

After about 17 hours of deliberation over two days, the jury was again sent to a hotel for the night.

McGrath pleaded guilty at the start of the trial three weeks ago to one charge of indecency for a 16th Marylands boy. The jury has also been told he was jailed in the mid-1990s for sexually abusing other Marylands boys in the 1970s and other boys when he was working in Christchurch in the early 1990s.
