McGrath case jury still out

A High Court jury in Christchurch has spent a third night in a hotel while deliberating on historic child- sex charges against a former Catholic brother.

The jury is due to resume its deliberations this morning after 26 hours of discussion over three days in the trial of Bernard Kevin McGrath.

McGrath, 58, denies 44 charges of sodomy and indecency relating to 15 former pupils of Marylands, a Catholic home in Halswell for troubled boys run by the St John of God order, where he was a teacher and dorm master in the 1970s.

The jury has been told McGrath was jailed in the mid-1990s for sexually abusing boys at the school and elsewhere and that he pleaded guilty at the start of the trial to indecency relating to a sixteenth boy at the school.

The jury has also been told that other Catholic brothers were sexually abusing boys at Marylands.

The jury asked its first question in the trial yesterday, about when another Catholic brother was at the school.
