Allegations
of Abuse in Institutions |

A former police officer
is concerned that behaviour police are brushing off as jokes could be just
the tip of the iceberg. Senior Sergeant Anthony
Solomona, from the Wiri-based emergency response unit, has been found guilty
of assaulting a 17-year-old suspect, but acquitted on three further charges
of assault and one of assault with a weapon. During his trial,
photos showing suspects wearing signs around their necks and police officers
carrying machetes were brought to light. A sergeant told the
court the behaviour is just police culture, but former police superintendent
Bryan Rowe says police officers should be serving the public, not abusing
them. Mr Rowe is not aware of
anything similar happening during his 33 years in the force. |
