Sir David Tompkins QC
will oversee an investigation into what has been described as a
"sick" culture within Counties Manukau police. The inquiry follows a
court case in which photos of a young man wearing a demeaning sign around his
neck and a masked officer brandishing a machete were given as evidence. The aim is to determine
whether there is evidence of a police culture that condones or encourages
acts of violence or other inappropriate treatment towards prisoners and
suspects. Sir David, a former
High Court Judge, will be supported by Inspector Pieter Roozendaal of North
Shore/Waitakere police. An 0800 number and
dedicated e-mail and postal addresses will be set up so public and staff can
make submissions. The Police Complaints
Authority will also receive a copy of the report. |
