Police officer fined for assault

An Auckland police officer convicted of assaulting a handcuffed man could remain on the beat.

Constable Greg Hall has been fined $2,750 and been ordered to pay court costs after he was found guilty of punching Hayden Seath more than four times in the back of a patrol car in November 2000.

Seath had been arrested for disorderly behaviour in an Albany pub carpark.

On Wednesday the judge said Seath should not be compensated because he had broken Hall's nose while resisting arrest.

In sentencing the judge said it was not inevitable that Hall should lose his job. That is now subject to an internal police inquiry.
