Police investigate assault on mental health patient

Police have confirmed they are investigating one of two alleged assaults on patients by staff members at a mental health unit in Porirua.

The incident being investigated is said to have taken place at the secure unit, Haumietiketike, in February.

Capital and Coast District Health Board says two employees were dismissed after an alleged assault on a male patient.

The board is also investigating another allegation of violence against a patient resulting on Easter Sunday, and a staff member has been suspended.

Police in Porirua have confirmed they are investigating the earlier complaint, but are waiting for the outcome of the DHB inquiry before deciding whether to look at the more recent incident.
