Complaint Over Treatment Of Mental Health Patients

A Wellington lawyer is taking a case to the Human Rights Commission over how patients are treated in mental health units.

The complaint follows the dismissal of three staff at the Haumietiketike secure unit in Porirua in relation to two separate alleged assaults on patients.

Michael Bott says that the police held off investigating until the unit had completed its own inquiry.

He says police don't do that in any other area and should do investigations of their own.

Mr Bott says there is a duty under the Police Act to respect all citizens, and there seems to be two different standards in this situation.

He says there may be a perception that the victim's rights are being ignored.
