Advocate calls for compensation for psychiatric patients

An advocate for psychiatric patients wants the Government to start talking compensation, in the wake of a critical report into the old mental health system.

A confidential forum reported back yesterday, after hearing from former patients, families and staff involved in state-run institutions between 1940 and 1992.

They described a culture of violence and sexual abuse.

The Health Minister says the issue of apologies and compensation is far from decided.

Advocate Anna de Jonge says that is not good enough and believes the Government is dragging its feet on compensation
