Allegations
of Abuse in Institutions |

The Salvation Army has
appointed former children's commissioner Roger McClay as an independent
monitor as it deals with allegations of abuse in its children's homes. A number of people have
alleged they were physically or sexually abused in Salvation Army homes from
the 1930s to the mid 1970s. McClay says he expects
to be fully involved in the process and will be available to meet with those
making allegations. A spokesperson for the
group alleging the abuse, Jan Lowe, says the Salvation Army has been issuing
conflicting messages and she is relieved an independent person is now
