Swearing, screaming at sex abuse trial

A woman suing the Catholic Church for historical abuse has told the Wellington High Court that she hates her mother for putting her in St Joseph's orphanage in Upper Hutt.

The 45-year-old is suing various church agencies for over $500,000 for abuse she allegedly suffered while in the care of the church in the 1960s and '70s.

The complainant, whose has name suppression, says she was physically and verbally abused by nuns at the orphanage and at St Mary's College and was sexually abused by foster families.

Church lawyers cross-examined the woman who frequently became angry and frustrated and began screaming and swearing.

She said she understood that her mother possibly had no other choice for her actions after her marriage ended and would have assumed that the church would look after her children.
