Bus companies are
concerned they are losing top employees because of new legislation. About 400 people will
have their passenger-class licenses revoked next Monday with no right of
appeal because of previous criminal convictions for sexual offences. Operations Manager at
Hawarden Garage and Transport, Michelle Yorston, says the North Canterbury
firm is losing its best driver because of something he did 40-years ago. Ms
Yorston says he is a fantastic employee and a wonderful driver, who has
attracted a lot of business to the company. She says they would take him back
in a heartbeat if they were allowed. Ms Yorston says the
company is doing everything it can to lobby for a law change. The Bus and Coach
Association also plans to lobby Parliament over the issue. Deputy director
Dave Jones says the association is compiling a list of drivers who are losing
their licences in unfair circumstances. Mr Jones says when MPs
passed the legislation they were probably not aware so many people were
involved. He believes the new law is far too inflexible. |
