Paedophiles with cameras are forcing several Waikato sporting organisations and businesses to rethink their photography policies. Gymnastics New Zealand took a hard line against the snappers during this week's national championships in Christchurch, making spectators register and label their cameras and cellphone cameras.

Gymnastics New Zealand is asking people to register before using cameras at this week's National Championships. The chief executive of the organisation Jack Ralston says the rule was introduced two years ago following a directive from the Federation of International Gymnastics in order to keep young competitors safe. Some have labelled the rule as over-cautious.

Spectator cameras at this week's national gymnastics championships in Christchurch will be registered and labelled to combat the risk of paedophiles taking inappropriate photos of young gymnasts. The Press newspaper reported today that Gymnastics New Zealand planned to crackdown on cameras, including photo-capable cellphones, at the champs which features 700 athletes, including young people. Spokesman Dave Worsley said nothing specific had prompted the move.
