Christchurch nuns accused of beatings

Five women who allege they were brutally beaten and traumatised as girls by Catholic nuns at a children's home in Christchurch are taking a group action.

The women say they were regularly strapped and caned for the smallest misdemeanours at Nazareth House, were emotionally deprived and were put into solitary confinement.

They want the Sisters of Nazareth to acknowledge that the abuse occurred and to pay compensation.

One woman says a nun burned her with a hot stick from a copper because, aged 7, she had difficulty operating the laundry mangle.
