Priest admits sexual misconduct

The former prison chaplain and restorative justice campaigner Jim Consedine has stood down as Lyttleton Catholic parish priest after admitting to sexual misconduct complaints from four women.

Father Consedine announced to his parish council he is to undergo treatment at a Sydney centre which treats clergy for violating professional boundaries, sexual disorders and abuse.

A spokesperson for the Bishop of Christchurch says Father Consedine was parish priest in Lyttelton for 17 years and the church, and his parish in particular, is shocked and deeply saddened.

She says the decision to send Father Consedine to a treatment programme came out of a mediation session with one of the abused women.

Father Consedine has been a marriage celebrant for over 30 years, was a prison chaplain for 23 years and has written books on restorative justice.
