Catholic brother to face trial

A former Catholic brother has been committed to stand trial for sexually abusing young boys.

The 64-year-old man, who lives in Australia and whose name is suppressed, worked at a residential school in Christchurch run by the St John of God order between 1966 and 1974.

He is accused of abusing five pupils, aged between eight and 15, during his time at the school for boys with learning difficulties.

The school has since closed.

The man, who travelled to New Zealand for a depositions hearing in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday, has been remanded on bail and will return to Australia.

A date for his trial will be set next month.
