Complaints procedure needed at CYF homes

Youth Advocacy group says there should be an independent complaints procedure in place for children in CYF homes

A youth advocacy group says children in CYF homes don't have any way to complain if they are subject to abuse.

Staff at CYF's Windrush Close facility in South Auckland have been stood down after formal complaints of assault on boys at the home.

The facility was closed for a week after the allegations were made.

Youth Law's John Hancock says children in such facilities don't have any way of being heard or believed.

He says they do not have a complaints process if they have not got legal counsel.

John Hancock doubts many children would be aware of what to do if they are abused.

He says young people should be able to contact someone independent, outside the immediate group of social workers.

CYF apparently didn't know about the complaints until informed by the police.
