A former Far North
police officer is to stand trial for allegedly raping a woman at Kaitaia
Police Station, 17 years ago. Timothy Ogle, who now
lives in Queensland, has been committed for trial following a depositions
hearing in the Auckland District Court. He faces four charges
of rape, one of unlawful sexual connection, two of attempted unlawful sexual
connection and one assault charge relating to events in the early hours of
March 20, 1988. He has pleaded not
guilty to all charges. Ogle faced police disciplinary
proceedings following the incident, and left the force. The matter is one of a
number of historic rape complaints against police being considered by the
Commission of Inquiry.
Police did not take a
statement from a woman who says one of their officers raped her, despite her
laying the complaint within hours of the alleged incident. Former Far North police
officer Timothy Ogle has been committed to stand trial on the 17-year-old
charges. The woman says she was
reluctantly giving the drunken Ogle a ride home when he tricked her into
getting out of her car, handcuffed her, and repeatedly raped her in a Kaitaia
police station office. She reported it the next
day and a superior of Ogle's came to visit her. But he did not make any
notes, or take a statement from her. Ogle left the police
after facing disciplinary action over what happened that evening. He denies four counts
of rape and a number of other sex charges. |
