Defence winding up case in Nicholas trial

The defence will close its case today in the trial of a top police officer and two of his former colleagues.

Assistant Commissioner Clint Rickards, Bob Schollum and Brad Shipton are accused of raping and sexually assaulting Rotorua woman Louise Nicholas 20 years ago.

The three defence lawyers' addresses follow a three-hour closing yesterday by Crown Prosecutor Brent Stanaway. Justice Tony Randerson is expected to wait until tomorrow morning to deliver his summing up and will then send the jury out to consider its verdicts.

The two-and-a-half week trial has included lengthy testimony from Louise Nicholas, and from Assistant Commissioner Rickards. The other two accused men chose not to give evidence.
