Rickards' son to play rugby in south
by Nathan Burdon

Embattled Assistant Police Commissioner Clint Rickards' son Willie Rickards will play rugby for Southland this season.

Willie, who lives with his mother in Auckland, has signed with Rugby Southland for two years while he studies at the Dunedin College of Education's Southland Campus and the sport and recreation course at the Southern Institute of Technology.

Rickards was a member of the Auckland sevens team that competed at this year's national tournament in Queenstown. Rickards was due to have arrived in Invercargill but has stayed in Auckland to support his father during the three-week trial.

Rugby Southland chief executive Roger Clark said Rickards had been advised by his father to have a fresh start in Southland after the trial.

He is expected to turn out for his new club team Woodlands within the next two weeks.

wThe jury deliberating on historic sex charges against Clint Rickards and two former police officers yesterday retired for a second night without reaching a verdict.

Rickards and former police officers Brad Shipton and Bob Schollum face a total of 20 charges of raping and sexually abusing Louise Nicholas in Rotorua in 1985 and 1986.
