Evidence to be on closed circuit TV

Children will give evidence via closed circuit television in the trial of a former Hamilton primary school teacher accused of indecently assaulting some of his pupils.

John Timothy Edgar, 37, will stand trial on April 20 after appearing today in Hamilton District Court before Judge Geoffrey Rea.

Edgar is accused of indecently assaulting seven boys under 12. He resigned from Hukanui Primary School soon after the allegations were made last November. One charge dates back to 1991.

The seven complainants and one witness, who are all aged under 17, will use closed circuit television to give their evidence.

David Wilson, QC, for the Crown, applied for closed circuit television to be used. Hamilton barrister Roger Laybourn, who appeared for Edgar, consented to the application.
