Court hears more praise for accused

The trial of accused former teacher John Timothy Edgar resumed today with more evidence from defence witnesses.

The trial, into its second week, is before Judge Lynton Laing in Hamilton District Court. Edgar is accused of seven counts of indecent assault and one of committing an indecent act while a teacher at Hukanui Primary School between 1991 and 1997.

A teacher, who worked with Edgar for four years, today described him as a warm sincere man. Gay Arkley said Edgar was well liked by his students. "The children flocked to John because he was so warm, so humorous and just a fun person to be with."

Two Crown witnesses were to be called later today. Hukanui principal Colin Muter and Detective Constable Neil Burgess testified last week but Crown prosecutor David Wilson QC successfully applied to have them recalled. They will give evidence about Edgar's suspension last November after a pupil alleged he was indecently assaulted by Edgar.
