John Edgar case

Jury's verdict brilliant, say parents

Leighton and Margaret Collins always knew acquitted teacher John Edgar was innocent.

Today they could proudly show off the Hamilton District Court jury decision to acquit Dr Edgar of all eight counts of indecent assault against boys.

Mr Collins described the verdict as brilliant but said the case should never have got to court.

Their daughter was taught by Dr Edgar in 1992 and used to refer to him as "her Dr Edgar" because she liked him so much. He was also popular with parents.

Mrs Collins said it was such a waste that Dr Edgar was no longer a teacher.

Dr Edgar was supported during his trial by a loyal band of friends who stayed until the jury reached a decision early this morning.
