(London) - Doctor sued over diagnosis of sex abuse

by Dearbhail McDonald - Moira Woods, the doctor who pioneered the uncovering
of child sex abuse in Ireland, is being sued by a young Dublin woman who
claims that she made false allegations of sexual abuse against her father.
Cherie Eustace, now 23, was referred in 1986 by a family doctor to the sexual
assault treatment unit at the Rotunda hospital, Dublin. Woods, then its director, concluded
that the then five-year-old had been sexually assaulted by her father, Edward
Hernon.

by Edward Hernon - In January of 1996 it became public knowledge that the
leading expert in child sexual cases, one Dr K.C.M. (Moira) Woods of the
Sexual Assault Treatment Unit of the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, was to face an
Inquiry by the Fitness to Practise Committee of the Irish Medical Council
into her alleged professional misconduct. The Inquiry, by the Fitness to
Practise Committee into the alleged professional misconduct of Dr Moira Woods
would involve Edward Patrick Hernon, the Rotunda Hospital,
the Department of Health, the Eastern Health Board and the South Eastern
Health Board.

misconduct, will long be remembered, there have been other notable cases as
well. Among those, the hearing into the professional conduct of Dr Moira
Woods, of the Sexual Assault Unit of the Rotunda Hospital, was a
controversial one

name after being wrongly accused of abusing his own daughter by discredited
doctor Moira Woods. Now exonerated, he tells Hermann Kelly about his long
personal struggle. "From the time I was first accused of abuse I wanted
to shout from the rooftops, 'I am an innocent man, falsely accused."
This was the initial reaction of Eddie Hernon after he was accused of
molesting his daughter in 1985.

Tribune - Medical reforms aim to speed up complaints cases

Last year, the
Medical Council found Dr Moira Woods, the former head of the Sexual Assault
Treatment Unit at the Rotunda Hospital guilty of professional misconduct in
relation to the diagnosis of sexual abuse of children in three families in
the 1980s. The council censured Woods after an inquiry that lasted five
years. However, some of the families claimed that it had taken 10 years from
the time they made their initial complaint to the final judgement.
