Dewar before Court

The Crown has told a High Court trial that a former police inspector covered up allegations made by Louise Nicholas of sexual misconduct by police officers, because he was a close friend of one of the men.

55-year old John Dewar faces four charges of wilfully attempting to obstruct, pervert or defeat the course of justice by suppressing or failing to act on allegations of sexual offending.

The crown prosecutor told the jury the accused had at one time been involved in a group sex session with one of the men, Brad Shipton, and a Bay of Plenty woman.

The crown says this was a powerful motive for Mr Dewar to fail to act on Mrs Nicholas's complaint against Brad Shipton, Bob Schollum and Clint Rickards.

The three were acquitted in subsequent trials.
